Mallory Opiela's Coaching Showcase
Below you will find my coaching showcase. This showcase exhibits my best work from the MAED program and how it has directly impacted my coaching and position as athletic director at my school. In this showcase you will find artifacts that show my creativity, devotion, and passion for our program and athletes.
Mission Statement Proposal for Eton Academy Athletics
For EAD 801, Leadership and Organizational Development, our culminating project for the course was creating a research paper that focused on one of the key aspects we learned. During the course we went into depth about mission statements and how they are vitally important to guide and help assess a program's effectiveness. I realized that our athletics program was missing such an important resource, so in my final project I wrote a proposal for an athletics mission statement. Year-Long Coaches Learning Program
One of our assignments in EAD 824, Leading Teacher Learning, involved a year long plan for teachers learning. In this plan we had to create professional development experiences for our teachers and provide specific examples on how this plan was going to unfold and what it would eventually look like. Since I am an athletic director, I was able to turn it into a coaches learning program and I based it off of the ideas of one of the most respected coaches of all time, Mr. John Wooden. Anti-Hazing Policy for Athletes
In KIN 854, Legal and Administrative Issues of Coaching, one of the main issues we talked about included the concept of hazing in athletics. It is sometimes thought of as a tradition or the way things have always been and some people just push it aside, but it cannot be. After researching various websites, articles and testimonials, we were encourage to write an anti-hazing policy for our athletes that explains its purpose, what is acceptable and unacceptable, and the Bulldog Creed that our athletes have to take to build a sense of team and community. Strength and Conditioning Exercise Circuit for Injury Prevention
In KIN 856, Physical Bases of Coaching, we had to create a strength and conditioning exercise circuit that focused on injury prevention. I decided to create one that focused on women's basketball, because I coach the varsity girl's basketball team at my school. In this project, first we had to identify the most common injuries in the sport and then we had to create an exercise circuit that would try to prevent those injuries from happening. As a female athlete who tore her ACL twice along with her meniscus, I wanted to make sure my athletes would not have to experience the pain and frustration that I had to as a young athlete. Paw Pride Program: Developing Self-esteem for Athlete's with Learning Disabilities
In KIN 857, Promoting Positive Youth Development Through Sport, our culminating project was to design a program which enhanced positive youth development in young people involved in sport and physical activity environments. I decided to create a program to increase self-esteem in my high school girl's basketball team. Again, all of my athletes have some type of learning disability and because of this, many have issues in regards to their self-esteem. I decided to use the sport they loved, basketball, and develop a program called, "The Paw Pride Program." In this program I focused on improving their self-esteem by having them participate in activities that focused on developing their leadership skills, becoming mentors to our younger athletes, and much more.
